Day 10 Give-Away - Where is Nicole?
Pick three: digital-fingerprint@geardiary.com
(1) Today was a “lazy Sunday” or…
(2) Nokia N95 owners don’t read GearDiary or…
(3) Nicole Jackson is AWOL
Even though the beautiful Vaja Nokia N95 case had the name “Nicole Jackson” embossed on the case, we could have spent the time tracking down Nicole via a Google search, but today was Sunday and we were lazy.
Fortunately, PeterClayton responded with “I would like the item.” Peter, not a problem! I often ask my wife, “Are you going to eat the rest of that steak?”
Monday begins a new work day, and while you’re surfing the web, take a brief pause and enter our daily GearDiary Give-Away. A simple comment like “I would like the item” or poetry, humor, great story, or anything else other than whining will land you a cool prize suitable for your own use or re-gifting as a Valentine’s Day expression of love. Good luck!

MWC News: HTC Shift is now available in Europe
Remember all the posts I did about anxiously awaiting the HTC Shift? Heck, I even sold my HTC Advantage in anticipation of purchasing one in October…only to find out that I had jumped the gun (more than) a little bit. The wait got so bad that I started to think the mini-laptop was just a whisper of something that HTC had planted in my brain, perhaps even a figment of my imagination. Sure, a few of them popped up on the internet over the last year, but it just seemed like delay, after delay, after delay plagued the mini-laptop. digital-fingerprint@geardiary.com
Well, it would appear that the wait is over, in Europe at least, February 11 marks the HTC Shift’s official availability.
When Jerry took this picture of me holding the Shift at CES, if finally began to sink in that the device might actually appear. The question now will be, is it too late or do I still want one? We shall see.

New treatment for BlackBerry thumb
The Xtensor is a new contraption aiming to rehabilitate chronic gamers, golfers and BlackBerry users through the clever use of elastic bands. By extending and retracting fingers, the user works all the forearm muscles related to BlackBerry thumb, and at $39.00, it’s about as cheap as do-it-yourself physiotherapy’s going to get. If you’re looking for some more sporty BlackBerry handwear, you might want to check these out. Thanks Josep!

A Glance at the Samsung Blackjack – SGH-i608 WM6 Smartphone
[Ed. note: Larry originally wrote this article for the Palm Is Life forum, but he has also translated it for Gear Diary. To see this review in the original Chinese, click here.] digital-fingerprint@geardiary.com
Yes, I know it may seem late to show my new toy since the Blackjack (Samsung SGH i-320) was announced 18 months ago. However, I am still very happy to have it for many of the reasons listed below:
1. Samsung SGH i608 is the first “Blackjack” series smartphone with 3.5G HSDPA built-in in Taiwan. (1.8Mbps download speed)
2. China Telecom in Taiwan is offering a promotion program with a competitive price with 2-year contract for most business users.
3. Samsung SGH i608 in Taiwan is already a “Chinese language localization & UI ready” with Chinese phonetic keypad symbol printed.
RIM patents touchscreen LCD
Based on the four month period between filing and publishing instead of the usual 18 months, we're probably going to be seeing something soon.
ZDNet has discovered that RIM has patented a form of touchscreen LCD. The patent, titled System and Method for Integrating A Touchscreen Within an LCD, describes “a touchscreen which is integrated into an LCD” in more detail than you can shake a stick at. The technology works primarily by detecting displacement of liquid crystal in a display and sending information based on that movement. ZDNet author Russell Shaw pointed out that the patent was published only four months after being filed rather than the usual 18, a very good indicator that the technology will be used soon. The rumors about a touchscreen for the BlackBerry 9000 have been mostly quashed, so it remains to be seen what device the technology will be used in.

Bluetooth Aircharge available for BlackBerry
For any travelling salesmen in the house, Aircharge has a new printer/credit card swipe thingie that lets you make transactions while on the move.
Aircharge announced BlackBerry support last summer for their credit transaction system, and have now launched a Bluetooth version, the Air Blue Pro, for even more flexibility. The $495 unit lets your swipe credit cards, print receipts, transmit data to your BlackBerry then out over the cellular network to complete sales. It looks like the system is limited to American networks for the time being, unfortunately.

E-TEN X800 Blog 2: Wi-Fi = No-Fi
One of the biggest draws to all of E-TEN’s devices is their radio offerings. Since the very beginning of my association with them, they’ve had just about ever method of connectivity known to man jammed in their device offerings: digital-fingerprint@geardiary.com
- Quad-Band GSM
- EDGE (now 3G) Wireless
- 802.11b/g Wireless Networking
- GPS
That’s one HECK of a lot of connectivity for one device. E-TEN also tends to make their devices relatively affordable, considering everything that their devices do. However, not so much on my particular X800…

Zimbra offers BlackBerry support
The open source e-mail server is now supporting BES, but will it survive a Microsoft acquisition?
The latest version of Zimbra, a piece of open-source e-mail server software recently bought by Yahoo!, now supports BlackBerry Enterprise Servers. Zimbra’s been rocking Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian, and iPhone devices before version 5.0, but it’s bound to take awhile to develop something of that magnitude without any help from RIM. Of course all the talk about Microsoft acquiring Yahoo! seriously leaves Zimbra’s future in question. You can download a trial of the BlackBerry connector here, the mobile client here, and the server software here.

“Apple just fixed a bug in the Nike+iPod software for running (the bug had voice distance in miles and display distance in kilometers, go figure) and I can use my 3G Nano again - the only problem is, I don’t have a case with a belt clip. I’ve been using an old marathon waist pack - and I can’t see the display. I’d love one of these cases. Chris, if I win, I’ll share one with you (only need one - sharing is good)!! Keep up the good work you guys!!”
Thanks for playing! You too can win an awesome prize (and make a fashion statement) by simply leaving a comment in the marathon like GearDiary Give-Away free for all. You can’t win unless you play, so enter today!

Webinar to show off BES 4.1 service pack 5
Word just got out of a webinar showing off the newest BlackBerry Enterprise Server service pack, featuring all the good stuff we’ve been looking forward to in OS 4.5, such as full HTML e-mail viewing and remote e-mail lookup. Of course, this is all the same stuff we’ve been seeing since WES ‘07, but who knows, maybe this is signaling an impending release. Even then, we’ll still have to wait for the handheld software to follow up before we can start seeing all these new features. The webinar is taking place Feb 21st., from 12 PM - 1PM EST for the Exchange presentation, and Feb. 20th. at the same time for the Lotus Domino presentation.
