Rogers stock down despite solid Q2 earnings

Rogers stock down despite solid Q2 earnings
12% up in earnings but $5 down in stocks? Looks like it will take a bit more to win investors over.

Sad faceChalk it up to poor forecasts, issues with iPhone pricing, or less than stellar subscriber numbers, but Rogers’ 12% earnings increase last quarter did little to assuage stockholders. Stock price is down to around $34 from $39 last week despite making $CAN 364 million last quarter versus $CAN 299 million last year. Unfortunately, wireless additions were down to 92,000 versus 133,000 last year, but this doesn’t take into account the full punch of the iPhone, and you can bet that the BlackBerry Bold will be pushing Q3 numbers in a good direction as well.

Why Do Nokia’s Desaturate?

The first detailed review ever of WowWee’s first female robot ever is now online, posted just minutes ago. In-depth review and companion video gives solid coverage of Femisapien’s revolutionary new touch based interface and shows several of her many truly unique and entertaining behaviors. Most importantly, the video shows that she is the first truly capable dancing robot in the consumer price range. The review page contains critical tips for buyers and would-be owners of WowWee’s new robot.

Femisapien is scheduled for release this month and is already shipping in the Hong Kong and some Asian markets. Her estimated U.S. price is $99 USD.

New BlackBerry app tests, demoralizes students

New BlackBerry app tests, demoralizes students
Cram is bringing tests to students' handhelds to make sure their wits are sharp for the real deal.

The aptly-named Cram launched recently, offering customizable, shareable tests on your BlackBerry. Cram allows for students to keep on studying on the go, even when feverishly going over last-minute notes outside the exam room. Studying on your BlackBerry would be especially handy for the bus, when having a bunch of books out isn’t exactly practical. Cram can import text files which are then translated into multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank tests, and using some web functions those tests can be easily shared with fellow crammers. For the BlackBerry-packing academic, Cram would pair up nicely with StudentDocket (previously known as StudentBerry).

Rogers BlackBerry Bold due August 12th?

Freshest rumours of the BlackBerry 9000 in Canada are pointing to a mid-August release, just like AT&T.

Rogers BlackBerry Bold

We’re still holding our breath for an announcement from Rogers today, but rumour has it that the BlackBerry Bold will be out in Canada on August 12th., putting us right on time with the AT&T delay. T-Mobile Germany had also changed their release date from July to August, so it looks like this is a widespread deal. I still think that that the recent OS 4.6 Desktop Manager and Java Desktop Environment are an indication that the Bold would not have been ready for the end of the month. Still worth the wait, no?

Austrlian business customers getting the BlackBerry Bold free

Vodafone and Telstra will be offering the BlackBerry 9000 to enterprise for zero down. Sweet deal.

BlackBerry Bold

Both Telstra and Vodafone will be offering the BlackBerry Bold to Australian enterprise customers for $0 up front. That in and of itself is a bold statement, and definitely a bargain for enterprises still packing older models. It’ll be hard for CIOs to turn down a deal like that, regardless of any growing enterprise interest in the iPhone. Maybe companies here in North America and elsewhere can look forward to equally aggressive moves from carriers, especially if they think they can coast on plans alone.

Even though the screen is small, I enjoy watching video on my iPhone and iPod Touch. No, it will never match the experience of watching a movie on a 50 inch hi-definition LCD, but it is more than merely functional- it is a pleasant experience. I’ve had my eye on Myvu’s various offerings for some time, watching carefully as each new one was released. I have wondered if they really worked. And, assuming they did work, wondered whether the experience of watching video through Myvu would be that much better than viewing on my iPhone.

So, when the opportunity to try out the Myvu Crystal arose (thanks Judie) I jumped at it.

Do they live up the hype? Read on to find out.

BlackBerry popular handset for Opera users

The BlackBerry 8310 holds onto 5th place worldwide among Opera Mini users.

Opera logo

Opera’s monthly report for June has taken a look at the popular handsets that folks are using with their mobile browser, and what sites they’re going to. After running down country-by-country top 10 lists, it was pretty interesting to see the stark differences between the Chinese (dominated by Nokia) and the American (which was almost all BlackBerry). The UK also has almost half of their list occupied by BlackBerry, with the 8310 nabbing top spot. Speaking of which, the BlackBerry 8310 holds 5th. place worldwide in the popularity contest among Opera users. This State of the Mobile Web report is a pretty cool idea on Opera’s part, especially if you’ve developed a taste for this kind of thing with Google Trends. If you’re sick of the BlackBerry’s browser, you can get Opera Mini by visiting http://mini.opera.com/ on your mobile.

itunes sync speed.jpg

Over on Howardforums I just read a posting by user Lightbrazer that he claims can significantly shorten the time to sync and backup your iPhone or Touch. According to the message, iPhone and Touch devices may be taking a long time because during the initial iTunes setup, the user checked an option to ALWAYS upload diagnostic (aka Crash) info to Apple. This option sends crash reports to Apple automatically - which depending upon server load could potentially take a while to deliver and therefore greatly increasing your perceived sync/backup times.

I tried this change with my iPhone setup (iPhone 3G) and while I never had a super slow sync problem - it seemed to speed things up quite a bit. Unlike other tricks which involve disabling the backup process (not smart imho), there does not seem to be any danger to this change because all you’re doing is reseting an option so when the iPhone or Touch syncs you are asked if you want to send anonymous diagnostic (crash) information to Apple. Simply click “No” and the sync may proceed much faster because it no longer automatically tries to upload that data. Instead during the sync you’ll be asked if you want to upload the anonymous data. Give it a try - instructions on the next page.
